Tap into Positivity to take Action

Do you ever feel so busy that some days, just completing the essentials (wash your face, feed the kids, get to work on time, etc.) feels like a huge accomplishment? Well gues what- it is! There are certainly those seasons of life when just getting through the day is a huge win! But at the same time, you have goals. Whether it’s incorporating more vegetables at dinner, getting in 10,000 steps a day, or spending five minutes in quiet stillness before bed, chances are, there is always some type of goal you are striving towards.

You know that you feel better about yourself on the days that take the actions necessary meet your goal. You feel a sense of pride and success, and you are motivated to make other healthy choices. It’s a domino effect!

Of course, there will always be the days when you just cannot…. Days where life comes at you sideways, and even some of the essential obligations are impossible. And this is okay! These are the days where you give yourself grace.

But on all the other days, there is something you can do that will help you on your path toward accomplishing your health goal. It only takes a minute, and it can be done while you are making coffee, walking into work, or taking care of a routine task.

You can use the power of your mindset and ask yourself one simple question: “How will doing this one thing, right now, benefit me today and in the future?”

For example, I have a daily goal of taking a 15-minute walk outside mid-day. It sounds simple, but I can’t begin to tell you how hard it can be to push pause on what I’m doing, throw on a jacket, and actually get myself outdoors. Once I’m out there, it’s wonderful, but getting there can be a challenge.

So when I notice I’m beginning to talk myself out of taking my walk break, here is what I do: I intentionally pause and ask, “How will taking this break help me today and in the future?”

The answer is that a 15 minute mid-day walk revitalizes me, gives me an opportunity to reset, and allows me to be more productive, creative, and calm for the rest of the day. I remind myself that I want to live a long, healthy, happy, and productive life. Accomplishing this small daily activity supports my long-term vision of optimal health and wellness. And 99% of the time, using this simple strategy gets me into action.

Tapping into positive emotions is an extremely powerful motivator. By allowing yourself just a few brief moments to imagine feeling the some of the positive emotions that result from taking action, you will begin to crave more of those feelings. Taking action becomes nearly effortless.
